Yong-Sook Lee is Associate Professor in the Department of Public Administration, Korea University, specialising in regional economic development, industrial policy, and urban & regional policy.
Yong-Sook has broad-based research interests in economic geography and public policy in Asia and has published extensively on industrial change in South Korea, Japan and Singapore. She is co-editor of Globalisation and the Politics of Forgetting (Routledge, 2006), with Brenda Yeoh, and Second Tier Cities: Rapid Growth Beyond the Metropolis (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1999) with Ann Markusen and Sean DiGiovanna. In recent years she has received research grants from the Korea National Research Foundation (2009-10: A Comparative Study on the Policies and Governance for a Creative City: the Cases of South Korea and Singapore), Korea University (2007-8: A Comparative Study of Biotechnology Industry Cluster Policy in South Korea and Singapore, Korea University) and the National University of Singapore (2005-7: Upgrading Industry Clusters in a Globalizing Context: A Comparative Study of South Korea and Singapore).
Yong-Sook has recent experience of researching Daedeok Innopolis in South Korea, and will extend this case study as part of the current proposal. She will also bring particular theoretical insights into developmental state politics, the role of the state in globalizing cluster developments, the growth of the polycentric city-region in Asia, and general knowledge of global production networks and creative city policies as applied particularly in Asian contexts. These themes resonate with the project focus on the development of physical ‘technoscapes’, and the role that science spaces come to play in international diplomacy as ‘ideoscapes’. Yong-Sook will bring important established linkages in Korea and throughout Asia to help further develop the proposed network.
